It’s evening, you’re late from work and looking for some nice R&R when all of a sudden, indescribable pain shoots up your leg – like the bite of a thousand fire ants, concentrated in a single spot. Congratulations, you just stepped on a Lego – the ritual passage for all parents (one which gets repeated over and over again). Don’t worry, it gets better. With the new Lego Movie, there is a catchy tune to keep you company while nursing your Lego injuries: “Everything is awesome!” is here to take a permanent residence in your brain and pop in at useful moments, like right when you are about to fall asleep. Such is the life of a parent whose child is enthralled by Lego. But since you love your little bundles of squirming joy, you’ll even heroically sacrifice yourself (and the safety of your feet) to throw a Lego themed birthday party. And what better subject is there than the new movie?
You don’t need to be up to speed with the lingo of the movie (and the aptly chosen character names like Wyldstyle or Vitruvius) to throw a great party. Below you’ll find a host of Lego Movie party ideas ranging from invites, decorations, favors, birthday cake decorating, costumes, games and much more.
Lego Movie Birthday Party Invitations and Ideas
Any great gathering of Master builders requires an invitation and probably the threat of certain doom to speed things along, but we’ll skip the last past. Lego Movie birthday party invitations are a great way for you to rally the troops and get them in the spirit of the theme.
You can go with a classic movie based invite: “Vitruvius requests your presence, Master Builders. Join Emmet and (name of birthday boy/girl) in the quest to stop Lord Business and the Kragle”. If you really want to impress, you can flex your movie buff muscles and include the opening prophecy from the movie, the one that Vitruvius makes about the wielder of the Piece of Resistance.
If you’re looking for more sparkle, there are lots of free printables on the internet, but you can stay right here as we’ve created these free Lego movie birthday invitations for you to download, print and fill in. (Click the image below to download the invites to your computer)
As an alternative here are some Lego Movie invites that comes in two styles, with Wyldstyle or Emmet, so you can send different cards to boys and girls.
Another way to go is the ‘movie premiere’ style, where the invitations become Lego Movie Tickets. They even have cute matching envelopes to send them in, with either Wyldstyle or Emmet on the front.
For the crafty, you can make the invite your playing field and transform it into a Lego block invitation. Just use colored cards, make circles with a hole puncher and stick them on with foam tape pads.
If your crafty senses are tingling after the last one, you can also make a pull apart Lego bricks invitation – it’s fun, colorful and most of all playful.
Just like the elusive Kragle, Master Builder passes or ID’s are hard to find, nevertheless, the spirit of Emmet guiding my hand prevailed and I found them at simonemadeit.com. With these badges, you can have the children assume character roles – you can even check the ID’s at the entrance, just to make sure that only Master Builders are allowed.
Lego Movie Birthday Party Decorations
You’ve sent your carrier pigeons with the invites and now you’re expecting a small horde of Master Builders to make their way to the rally point, Cloud Cuckoo Land. Funnily enough, once you survey the after-party ‘damage’, the name will suddenly seem more fitting. But for now, you still have to spruce up “The Dog” – and no, that’s not some funny metaphor or old saying. The Master Builders in the movie meet up in a giant dog shaped building.
To keep with the theme, you can scatter dog plushies around the house. You can add giant printable dog eyes, nose and ears on the entrance door and make the tongue with a red carpet. On the inside, you can go crazy with rainbow patterns, from banners, to balloons. Since Cloud Cuckoo Land is a place of imagination gone wild, you can create an ‘up is down’ effect by placing the balloons and streamers on the ground. Add in a poster of Unikitty and you’re set.
The same red carpet from above can be used for the movie style theme – goes well with the movie ticket invites. To add more charm, you can set up a ticket booth at the front. This cardboard booth is easy to make so you don’t need to be a DIY master to get the hang of it. You can scatter movie reels throughout the house – they are easy to make.
To complement the rest of your Lego Movie party decorations use our Lego Movie printable pack to incorporate some themed decorations into your party. The set includes a Happy birthday banner, birthday sign, cupcake wrappers and toppers and plenty of other items that can be used for this party. Here’s how some of the templates will look once printed and in use.

If you’re going for the Master Builder badges, then you can add construction strips throughout the house. You can also find posters with “Caution, Master Builder at work” on Etsy or Amazon. To round off the look, add traffic cones and tool belts around the house. You can even hand out the tool belts to the children at the start of the party – they will double as a costume prop.
For a special effect add Lego bricks in transparent soap bottles and scatter giant Lego pieces around the house (you can make those using juice boxes as a base).
You can even make your own Lego head paper lanterns following an easy tutorial. While you’re at it, why not make Lego head balloons: use yellow balloons on which you draw Lego character faces with sharpie – presto, themed decoration is ready.
Lego Movie Tableware/Set up
It’s not just the house that needs to receive your decorative attention; the party table needs to stand out as well. If you have a lot of Lego blocks, ambition and spare time, you can spell out your child’s name with Lego blocks. To add some color and character, here is a whole printable set including cupcake wrappers and candy bar wraps. And we mustn’t forget the Lego Movie water bottles labels.
Another idea for a Lego Movie table party set up is to present snacks and candy in Lego Man jars – take any round shaped jar, spray paint it yellow and then draw a Lego face with sharpie. You can do the same trick with yellow paper cuts and some sharpie (by the end of the party you’ll feel like some sharpie dueling master – Western style).
To add to the fun, you can present Piece of Resistance juice boxes.
If you’re going with the movie theme from above – Lego Movie Ticket invites and decorations in the same theme then have the table match the set. Make the tablecloth white with red stripes – or buy it. In the background of the stand add a Lego Movie poster surrounded by a frame with big led lights (looks like a movie star lit up mirror). Feel free to add popcorn boxes (pic below) and movie reel (like in the tutorial found in the section above).
If, however, you are more tempted by the Master Builder theme you can add “caution” ribbons and make signs with “Master Builder work area”. You can then make “warning” food labels – yellow background, black stripped edges. You can also add traffic cones. Here is a simple tutorial on how to make a Styrofoam traffic cone – it works great as a candy holder.
For the Cloud Cuckoo Land style, you must have an explosion of color and oddly placed figurines. Here’s a great tip to recreate the wonky effect of the place – print the food labels backwards.
Lego Movie Birthday outfits/Costumes
To make your decorator’s hair soar, the last part involves playing dress up. This can be just as fun for dads as it is for moms, since there a few DIY costume ideas they can get busy with.
The simplest Lego Movie birthday outfit idea consists of printing face masks. Here are some nice free printable Lego face masks. To go with the theme, you can do some Lego stamping – while that might sound like all kinds of horror under other circumstances, like this it’s a fun and simple way of creating props for a Lego birthday party. You just need a bunch of scarves and some Lego blocks to treat as a rubber stamp.
If you’re going for the Master Builder style, then its’ a must to have kids dressed like Emmet with a construction worker vest, tool bag and helmet. Here is how to make the vest yourself. Regardless of whether you bought it or made it, here is a tutorial on how to personalize it. Since the girls might feel left out, you can make a Wyldstyle costume – its’ easy to make. It only requires hair chalk, a hoodie and bright colored blue and pink duct tape.
For the Master Builder parent, you can carve out your very own foam made Emmet costume. There are even Kragle costume tutorials. For a less time consuming options, Lego Movie character T-shirts are the way to go.
Lego Movie Party Food and drinks
The tiny army of Master Builders is here and they need lots and lots of fuel to keep their creative construction juices flowing. Luckily, you status as Vitruvius, Master Builder (and Gandalf impersonator) grants you the ability to create mini helper robots (kind of like Santa’s little helpers) that take care of everything for you. Back in reality land, if you’re looking for some great Lego Movie party food ideas but don’t want to spend days slaving in a kitchen, there are a few things you can do.
In this case, the Lego brick is your friend – anything can be made into that shape. A quick, nutritious and visually appealing morsel is the Lego pizza – cut some pepperoni pizza into rectangles and make sure the pepperonis are set in parallel lines. That’s all. Easy and it looks something like this.
Taking that principle further, how about we make some Lego crackers and cheese – you just have to cut out cheese circles and glue them on the crackers with spray cheese. You can ‘brick’ pretty much anything – candy bars and M&Ms anyone?
While we’re on the topic of sweets, no children’s party is complete without tooth rotting treats – the kind that haunts your dentist at night and makes him brush his teeth extra long in the morning. Let’s start off with cookies. First off, the classic Lego block cookie – cookies and M&Ms. There’s both a tutorial and cookie recipes. If you’re looking to spend some more time and effort, here’s stage two of the cookie apprenticeship: the Lego Man Head Cookies (quite a mouthful).
Then, if you’re ready to graduate, try the Lego Piñata Cookies. I’ll give you a hint, they look like Lego blocks and they are filled with candy – how’s that for a nightmare, Mr. Dentist?
Up next, you can also make Lego Marshmallow pops – you just need marshmallows, yellow candy melts, black frosting in a tube and candy sticks. The process is easy; you just add one marshmallow per candy stick, making sure to insert the stick only enough to give the marshmallow stability. Then you dip it in candy melts, stick it out to dry in a foam block and when that is done you make Lego faces on them with the black frosting.
For a bit of movie specific fun, make some tacos – Bricksburg sure loves its’ Taco Tuesday. Here are some kid friendly taco recipes. You can add a fruit rainbow that you can call “Princess Unikitty’s rainbow” and have donuts labeled as “Good Cop/Bad Cop donuts”.
If the Master Builders get thirsty, just give them some Octan Fuel (any type of soda can be labeled as that.
Lego Movie Birthday Cake and Cupcakes
The Piece of Resistance for any party is the birthday cake – just make sure not to add any Kragle to the mix.
To start you off, you can make a simple Lego cake with frosting and marshmallows or Oreos as the Lego top.
For something more intricate, you can design a cake that is completely covered in fondant Lego blocks. The tutorial comes with a video, plus some instructions on how to make your own silicone Lego brick mold. Or you could just buy said mold on Amazon.
For a less time consuming option, you can follow the idea above, but instead of covering the whole cake you just frame the top and write your child’s name with Lego blocks.
With those out of the way we can get down and…crafty with some character shaped cakes. Thankfully, the goddess of the Internet is generous with its Lego Movie cake tutorials. If you like the reformed-bad-guy-turned-good-guy trope, then a simple Good Cop/Bad Cop Cake is just the thing for you. You can even use a different tutorial for the head base, like the one found here.
Some more Lego Movie birthday cake ideas center on the main characters Emmet cake (as seen above) , Unikitty cake and Wyldstyle cake. No Vitruvius cake sadly, perhaps since his ghost is on a different plane of existence now? These cakes are a bit more complicated than the one above, but the results are stunning – all you have to do is carve out some cake (thankfully, Lego is mostly made out of rectangular and circular shapes).
For those of extreme legendary skill and even more extreme patience, there is a 1h 30 min tutorial on how to make a 3D Emmet cake. There are even printable templates, and the end result is worthy of a true Master Builder.
To supplement your birthday sweets arsenal, you can make Lego themed cupcakes. You can easily find printable Lego cupcake toppers. For some more intricate cupcake toppers, you can make a fondant Lego figurine and surround it with some fondant Lego blocks. If you’re short on time, you can always just use the non-eatable figurines that your children play with to give your cupcakes that extra bit of oomph.
Lego Movie Party Games and Activities
Master builders, as the creative geniuses they are, get bored easily so you need to keep them entertained. Given how much personality the characters in the movie exude, it’s pretty easy to transfer that to your party.
Instead of pin the tail, you can have the children pin the Piece of Resistance on Emmet. It was stuck to him for most of the movie – we might as well consider it a part of Emmet.
Then there is the classic Lego Movie bingo. With the same character sheet you can also play “Name that character”.
A great idea for a Lego Movie party game is a Kragle scavenger hunt. Divide the children into teams and have them find the missing Kragles before Lord Business gets his hands on them. The team that gets to 20? 30? (As much as you feel like hiding) Kragle pieces first, wins.
Alternatively, you can make up a story about how the Piece of Resistance was broken and scattered all over the world. The Piece of Resistance can be a puzzle (some nice printed image that you’ve cut up), and the children have to search for the pieces and complete the puzzle before time runs out and all of Bricksburg is glued in place.
If you feel like avenging your feet, organize a Lego walk of fire – the children would have to walk on a ‘carpet’ of Lego blocks, barefoot. The word ‘carpet’ and the actual softness of the trek being as far removed from each other as they can while still remaining part of the same language. Make sure to reward the brave ones – they have earned it.
If you’re not afraid of having the song stuck in your head the entire day, you can play musical chairs (or hot potato) to the “Everything is awesome” tune. Be warned, once it gets inside, it will take an equally catchy tune to displace it from the mind.
What’s the use of having a cop character if you can’t make a donut eating contest? Match the “Good Cop/Bad Cop donut eating contest” with a soda drinking contest and have the children work in pairs. To make the soda contest more challenging, forbid them from using their hands, and place the drinks in cups. Then let the messy fun begin. The winners should be the team that finishes both challenges the fastest.
You can also play Simon Says with a twist – “Wild Child Lucy Says”. Here the children will have to do ninja moves.
For some swashbuckling fun, you can organize a foam sword fight and call it “MetalBeard’s duel”. You can organize it like a championship – or just let the kids mess about.
Lastly, one must not forget the obligatory Master Builder table – where the children can make their own Lego creations.
Lego Movie Birthday Party Favors and Ideas
Once the party winds down, it’s time for the Master Builders to retire to their own cities, but not before they get some extra treats. The simplest Lego Movie party favor idea is to turn gift bags into Lego bricks. Use a single color, preferably red, rectangular shaped gift bags and glue two or three circles of the same color on it – tada, Piece of Resistance in disguise (and the tiny Master Builders have to protect it till they get home).
If you don’t mind folding, cutting and gluing, you can make your own Lego party favor box with the printable template available in the link. To go the extra mile, why not have the party box shaped like a Lego block.
You can always add mini figurines, Lego candy blocks or Lego shaped erasers to the mix. All of these items can be found on online shops like Amazon.
For the DIY spirits, you can make your own Lego magnets. What’s more, you can create Lego friendship bracelets, or, by drilling just one hole you can make a Piece de Resistance necklace, for the proud Master Builders.
Lego Movie Birthday gift ideas
We should not forget the star of the party – the birthday boy or girl. While the party is a gift in itself, if you’re looking for special Lego Movie birthday gift ideas then you can start off with Lego organizers. Lego lovers will adore these since they can keep track of their bricks. There is an entire host of Lego Books – play books and encyclopedias with beloved characters (it pays off to sneak in a little science with the entertainment).
If your child loves Lego and is glued to the TV (or rather Tablet and Smartphone in this day and age) you can get them a Plyego subscription. Plyego is a movie channel for Lego.
One way you can never fail is with the classics – you can always get a Lego Movie play set – from helicopters, to Bad Cop’s police station, to Bricksburg and Cloud Cuckoo Land. There are so many options available you won’t really know what to choose. In fact, there are a lot more movie based products than you would think, from watches, to tableware where the handles are made to resemble Lego bricks. You can even get an Emmet or Wyldstyle toolbox lunch box.
