Nightmare before Christmas is one of those little gems, like Coraline, that not only appeals to both children and parents, but also somehow manages to survive the passage of time with grace. More than a decade has passed and “this is Halloween” and “all hail the pumpkin king” is still resounding in my head.  If you’ve introduced your children to this wonderful classic, then they’re probably hooked and praise the master of fright, Jack Skellington alongside you. If you haven’t done this yet, what are you waiting for?

A Nightmare before Christmas party is always supremely entertaining. Not only do you get to play with great costumes, but you can dust off Halloween and Christmas decorations together (especially if you don’t get enough of those holidays) and make a nice horrifying mish mash of them, in the spirit of the movie (skeleton reindeer anyone? Toy ducks with teeth and bullet holes anyone?).  Since there are a lot of tips and tricks and hacks for this one movie, below you’ll find a nice selection of the best Nightmare before Christmas birthday party ideas that we could find in all the corners of the internet (even the quest for the Holy Grail pales in comparison to the internet sweep that just occurred).

Nightmare Before Christmas Party Invitations

A Nightmare before Christmas party invite needs to be in equal parts creepy and charming. Tough mix, says the crowd – but we can pull it off.  For those without time to spare, there’s always the good’ol friendly Etsy (like that neighbor with all the tools and all the baking ingredients that always opens the door).  There are plenty of Nightmare before Christmas cards in the sea of Etsy – from tiny fish to giant customizable whales (can you tell I took that analogy too far?).  But, where’s the fun in that?

Why not make your own cards? For a nice start, try this Nightmare before Christmas font. You can add it to this printable, or this one, or that one and let’s not forget the iconic graveyard dome under moonlight.  For max points on the most decorated card in history, you can even add some ghost pop-ups inside.

If you’re feeling playful, you can make a pumpkin card – with an ‘all hail the pumpkin king’ message.  Another fun message would be : “What’s this? What’s that?/ A party’s to be had”.

Now, if the theme song is stuck in your head why not share the joy with others and make a musical card with This is Halloween.

Here’s where you can let your inner decorating monster roam free and put up a production to rival Skellington’s own Halloween shows –muhahaha..er.   To start off simple, use a display board and add this printable text of the theme song in proper creepy font.  Then you can copy Jack, and make some ‘cheerful’ paper spider snowflakes.  But we’re getting ahead of ourselves – the entrance needs to be touched up first, and what better way than with Jack’s eyeball doorbell ? It’s squishy, it’s gross – and if you can add your own ring, make it a scream (it even almost rhymes, it’s so perfect).

Your yard needs to get in on the action with some pumpkin scarecrows. Like the ones bearing a “Welcome to Halloween Town” sign in the movie.  In fact, that sign would be perfect to spruce up the design in the tutorial, alongside some scary face pumpkin carving.  In fact, you can add a pumpkin here and a pumpkin there – a pumpkin everywhere (musicals are contagious, be warned).  For designs, check out this place especially the witch pumpkin, the vampire one and the zombie one.

Another Nightmare before Christmas party decoration idea is to add floating witch hat luminaries and Jack milk jug lights. You can round off the look with floating ghosts or hanging ghosts and even try your hand at some skeleton reindeer  (although there are no tutorials, you can try to make a cardboard cutout of the outline and then a separate cutout of the bones and glue the two together).

For the ones that are not afraid of sawing their thumbs off, or shooting a nail into their own foot (which, while in the Halloween spirit, will definitely put you off the party mood), there are some more crafty tutorials, steadily increasing in difficulty til Zen or Super Saiyan carpentry is reached.  To start off, this easy Nightmare before Christmas countdown to Halloween/Christmas clock.  Mind you, it does not have to be a functional clock.  Moving up, you can also add some DIY Jack and Sally plywood yard decorations.

If you have sufficient time on your hands you can try your hand at this Zero dog house grave stone made with foam pads.  Or make some Halloween/Christmas toys like the Jack in the box toy or nightmare duck toy.

Last but not least, is the pumpkin king himself – PVC pipes, screws, stuffing, cloth and skill and you get a life-sized Jack Skellington puppet.

Nightmare Before Christmas Party table setup

On to the party table set-up, you can start with a spiderweb tablecloth. Then, to get the guests in the mood, you can add some tombstones in the background or at foot of the table. Alternatively, you can make a backdrop of the Nightmare before Christmas graveyard hill and moon out of felt and a bedsheet, something like this.

For the crafty, you can make a Nightmare before Christmas cupcake stand.  You can also fill it with other treats. To make the hill shape, you need to trace it and then cut it out of plywood. Then it’s a simple matter of adding shelves – for convenience, you can make it one sided.

Another Nightmare before Christmas party table idea is to add bat napkins and make your own Skellington spoons.  As with the decorating, we mustn’t forget the villain. You can add some Oogie Boogie dice (the pattern is at page four, after a long License ramble) or an Oggie Boogie candy dish.  To do that you will need to cover a bowl in burlap, paint in the face models from here and fill it with gummy worms.

Nightmare Before Christmas Costumes and Birthday Outfits

Once the house is suitably creepy/charming it’s time to dress yourself, er, the kids (though nobody says you can’t join in on the fun).  For starters, there are a lot, and I mean a lot, of Skellington face paint tutorials. Here are a few to set you on the right path, ranging from scary to adorable: scary, another tutorial and cutesy Christmas Jack.  You’ll need a lot of white, black and grey face paint.  Ideally, you can cover your kid’s hair with a black hair mesh and paint till the edges (but it will be hard to get them to stay still that long – and not smudge anything).   There are also Sally makeup tutorials with a white base and a blueish base (and completely different styles, overall).

With a bit of luck, we even managed to find a Zero inspired makeup tutorial and a Oogie inspired one. For the Oogie tutorial, it would work better to cover the face in black paint to the hairline edge.

Since we’re done with faces, it’s time to move on to the full body experience.  You can make Skellington costumes with suits or dark long-sleeved shirts and white paint, like this suit based one or this long-sleeved shirt one.  There are also Sally costumes inviting you to cover dresses and skirts with fabric patches (and add funky detail with markers) like this one or this one.We also tracked down a Mayor costume and even Lock, Shock and Barrel.

Nightmare Before Christmas Party Food and Drinks

Ghouls have ferocious appetites – so you need to be prepared. Fortunately, there are a lot, and I mean a lot as in McScrooge vault size, Skellington food ideas.  For instance, there are these scrumptious Jack Skellington caramel apples (you’ll need to scroll a bit to the recipe – till you see the caramel apple). Then there is this easy to make Skellington pizza. Or how about some Skellington brownie bites?  If you’re in the breakfast mood, then there are Skellington pancakes.  For bite sized treats, try making some Skellington cake pops. And for something more substantial, give this Skellington sandwich a shot.

Now that that’s out of the way, you can cool off your guests with Nightshade and Frog’s Breath drinks (frog’s breath should be green) or Ghoulish punch.

For more substantial food, you can make some snake and spider stew , you know “Perhaps he’ll make his special brew/of snake and spider stew – Mmm!” (while in my book, the only good spider is a dead one, I wouldn’t advertise it as a snack).

For extra creep factor, make some creepy eyeball cheese balls (nice and squishy, mm). Then there is the Snake bread – to make it match the snake on the show add some orange food coloring to the dough. Alternatively, you can make a slithering snakewitch.

And if you fear the children will be starved of sugar, then replenish their supplies with graveyard pudding and doll cookies (patched up like Sally).

Nightmare Before Christmas Birthday Cakes and Cupcakes

For the main event, the birthday cake, you can make use of your local cake decorating shop and ask them to print a Nightmare before Christmas cake topper with edible ink.  If you’re not afraid to get down and dirty (inevitable when it comes to baking, especially if the children decide to ‘help’), then you can make this simple Skellington cake. Here’s another similarly simple model.

For some super easy 3D fun, you can make a Jack and Sally inside surprise cake and fill it with all sorts of yummy goodness (candy, gummy worms).   Another easy and fun to make cake is a spiderweb shape Skellington cake (what makes it more special is the fact that the cake is carved to match the shape of the web).  Going with the theme, you can try your hand at a Graveyard cake and add figurines from the show. Alternatively,if you want more than just one tombstone, you can pipe grass onto the cake, make tombstones out of rice crispies and cover them with fondant (much like in the tutorial, except in miniature and multiplied).

Since I mentioned figurines and toppers, you can also try to make a Skellington and pumpkin topper – keep in mind though, as pretty as it looks, it’s quite time consuming and bound to frustrate those that have little experience working with fondant.  Here’s a slightly easier Skellington topper with a decorated cake base.

Another Nightmare before Christmas birthday cake idea is to make an Oogie Boogie cake.  You’ll need to print out an Oogie shape, trace and cut the shape on the cake and cover the result in icing. Then you’ll have to cover the cake with fondant. For the finishing touches,  you can add gummy worms and cut fondant strips and make the stitches.

Lastly, if you child prefers cupcakes, then you make some Skellington cupcakes or cauldron cupcakes (they look like this).

Nightmare Before Christmas Party Games and activities

A bored Skellington is a menace, as we’ve seen from the Christmas/Halloween combo (bloodsucking vampire toy?). Imagine a whole troop of restless ghouls – more like Lock, Shock and Barrel (brr).

For the younger Nightmare before Christmas fans, there are quite a few coloring pages.  Then there is the Pin the tail on the donkey with a twist: pint the worm on Oogie, pin the arm on Sally (she keeps losing them, poor girl), pin the nose on Zero etc. 

If you want something more active, you can have the children play some Oogie Boogie bean bag toss. Check the Oogie costume for ideas on how to make an Oogie mask – or, simply print an Oogie image, glue it to some sturdy cardboard and cut out the mouth.

Another fun idea is to play the Skellington Christmas lights popping game – a version of the balloon popping game. Each guest has a balloon tied to their leg. There are two teams, each team with one color balloon. They have to pop the other team’s balloons without using their hands. The last balloon to be popped decides the winning team.

Then there is the Spider web race game.  You’ll need to make a spider web on the floor using green tape.  You’ll also need some cardboard circles and toy spiders. Place the circles between the web strands and make it a timed race. The children will have to deliver the present (spiders) in the chimneys (circles) before the Christmas Eve night is over.

Another fun Nightmare before Christmas party game idea is to play a Jack Skellington skeleton relay race – you can buy or draw a skeleton on sturdy cardboard and cut out each individual bone. You’ll have to divide the kids into teams. Each team gets a complete skeleton cut into bones.  They have to bring the skeleton bones one by one from one end of the room/yard to the other. The first team to fully assemble their skeleton on the other side wins. For extra Night before Christmas fun, make the skull resemble Jack’s head.

Or you could play the ‘What’s this? What’s that?’ game.  It’s the age old guessing game with a Night before Christmas twist.  You’ll have to cover several boxes and place bowl with various things inside (check out this place for ideas). Children have to guess what’s inside each bowl.  You should number the boxes and then give each child a piece of paper and a pencil. Whoever gets the most right wins.

Last but not least is the Oggie Boogie’s monster dice game where one of the die has numbers the other has actions (like spider crawl). The children then have to obey the Oogie dice.

And what better way to do that than to make Oggie boogie bags.  You can even include an Oogie boogie DIY monster . though a bit time consuming to make – since you’ll have to do it a few dozen times, it will be great fun for the kids (they can even use it as a candy bag).  You can also add some Jack and Sally coffin pendants or Jack soft touch key rings.  There are also Night beforeChristmas stickers, dollar bills, bottlecap necklaces and magnets.

With sing-along’s, fun characters and lessons on friendship, equality and diversity mixed in it’s no wonder the Disney show is a hit (for both parents and children).  On the downside, the show is relatively new when compared to other cartoons which makes it harder to put together a Lion Guard birthday party (most tutorials and tips out there are heavily focused on the Lion King and especially Pumba and Timon). First things’ first – color scheme.  Lion Guard follows the tradition of its predecessor, so you’ll do fine with gold-red-black.

Then, it’s time to rock the jungle look. And what better place to start than by making some vines.  You can cut out giant leaf shapes out of green paper and make the vines by twisting butcher paper.  Don’t be scared to go a little crazy when covering things with vines. Once you’re done with that, you need to prep your jungle hallway with the aid of different shades of green streamers and looping garlands hanging from the ceiling.

Every lion king (or prince/princess in this case) has to look his or her best. The good news is that there are plenty of lion and cheetah makeup tutorials and costume ideas. The bad news is that honey badgers, hippos and egrets are not as popular – who would have thought?.

Let’s start with the head of the pack, the young Kion.  You can either do a Kion face paint (based on Simba, just add a red tuft of hair at the top of the head) or make a Kion Mask (here’s even an alternate mask).

Now comes the fun part – the costume. Here are some 20+ ideas for lion costumes – lions are a popular choice and given the abundance of tutorials (this is just scratching the surface) you can just pick a look that you like (or looks easiest to make).  Out of all the ideas, here’s my personal favorite lion costume tutorial.

*Fuli Costume Ideas
On to Fuli. You can start with a Fuli face paint tutorial and then round off the look with this National Geographic costume tutorial – all you’ll need are scissors, furry cheetah material, black felt, wires, a glue gun and a stapler (add to that a light yellow shirt +pants combo and you’re set).

*Beshte Costume Ideas
If your child loves Beshte, then here’s a printable mask. For the costume, you can use grey clothes/PJs and attach a tail (you can make the tail with grey rope, or spray paint the rope and add a black tuft at the end). You can also use some pink felt for the soft hippo underbelly.  Just cut a big circle and attach it to the front of the costume/one piece PJ.  For more realism, add a pillow under the costume and secure it in place with a belt.

Another Lion Guard birthday costume idea is to try and make a Bunga costume. For that you can use a honey badger mask . For the rest you can use a skunk costume as a base. Follow the tutorial but replace the hoodie with a light grey-purple hoodie.

Once the preparations are complete, it’s time to brace yourself for the stampede – and the first place to go is always the food table.

Then comes the main feast, the holy grail of Lion Guard food items – the grubs.  Since the animals on the show are obsessed with bugs, bugs, bugs (Timon and Pumba have taught them well).  For grubs you can use gummy worms or strips of hot dog. You can make beetle wings with chips and present raisins as dried ant. In fact, you can make some ants on a log  with celery, cream cheese and raisins.

Then there’s a corndog centipede for those that feel that gummy worms are not long enough (or those that like a bit more of a struggle from their meal).

When all that isn’t nailed down has been eaten, it’s time to entertain the tiny Pride Rock guardians. 

*Pin the tail on a Lion Guard Game
The easiest way to do that is with a put the tail on the Lion Guard member game (you can even include Jasiri as an honorary member). 

*Kion’s Roar Game
For something a little more complicated, you can have the kids play Kion’s roar (a version of stand up and roar).  For that you need to count the number of people – let’s say there are 16. Once you say start, people have to stand up and shout numbers sequentially from 1 upwards – till 16. Anyone can start. You can’t stand up twice or shout a number at the same time as someone else. The last person up loses.

*Monkey See, Monkey Do
Another Lion Guard party game idea is to play ‘Monkey see, monkey do’, but with a Lion Guard twist: roar like Kion, run like Fuli, fly like Ono etc.

*Laughing Hyenas
You can also play ‘Laughing Hyenas’ – the children sit in a circle. The game needs a judge, namely a parent (your lucky day). The judge designates a hyena.  The hyena has to sit in the middle of the circle and act silly to get the others to laugh. Whoever laughs joins the hyena in the middle. The last person left in the circle is the winner.

*Sleeping Lions
Another game variation is sleeping lions. The Lion Guard is asleep (the children are lying motionless on the floor) while a hyena is on the prowl (a single child). The hyena has to make the Lion Guard laugh without touching them. Who laughs is either eliminated or joins the hyena. Last lion standing wins.

*Jungle Animal Plate crafts
But the most fun to be had is with plates.  Here are just a few suggestions of animal paper plates: paper plate Beshte (hippo), leopard print plates, Kion and Fuli plates, Ono paper plate birds (use white or yellow/orange feathers).

*Duck Duck Goose (jungle version)
For another twist on childhood classics, play some ‘duck, duck, goose’ but with lions and hyenas.  Have the children sit in a circle. One child is the lion and has to walk on the outside and tap each player while saying lion, lion etc. The child that gets tapped with hyena has to catch the lion before he or she occupies the empty space left in the circle. If the lion manages to sit down, the hyena becomes the new ‘it’ and has to tap children. If the lion is caught, he or she has to be ‘it’ for another round.

The Lion Guard Birthday Gift Ideas

When it comes to Lion Guard birthday gift ideas, the Disney store is a good place to start. You can find a pretty wide range of merchandise, from Lion Guard cups and t-shirts to character plushies. The nice thing about it is that each character gets to shine in the spotlight – want a plushy of Jasiri? No problem.  The same can be said for action figures – you can find them in mini figure set or individual characters.  There are also plenty of Lion Guard playsets that you can explore with the figurines (like the ‘Defend the Pride Lands’ set).

For the game inclined children (is there really a child who isn’t?) you can purchase a Lion Guard matching game. There are even puzzles ranging in complexity (from 12 to many, many more pieces).

Another gift idea is to go traditional with some Lion Guard backpacks or lunchbag – there are even bedheets available. And if your child loves activity, you can get a huffy lion guard bike (that’s how it was listed, believe it or not).

Dinotrux is the love child of ‘The Land Before Time’ and ‘Transformers’ with a dash of ‘Paw Patrol’ (since we’re talking about utility vehicles).  All in all, that should make your head spin and wonder what was in the water the Netflix crew drank before agreeing to air this show. Apparently, it was the good stuff – because the show works, maintaining a nice balance of quirky, funny and educational.  If you can stomach the occasional cheesy dialogue, then you might even find yourself enjoying the show alongside your children – who doesn’t love puzzles and problem solving? Unfortunately, since the show is rather new (with only 10 episodes aired in 2015 and the new season started in March this year) tutorials and party ideas for Dinotrux are like rare gems on the internet, precious and hard to find.  On the bright side, that’s what this article is here to fix – below you’ll find a whole array of Dinotrux birthday party ideas, from costumes, to favors to tableware.

Dinotrux Birthday Party Invitations

Dinotrux are hard to gather in one spot, preferring to stick to their own herd instead of mixing with other species. That’s why you need to follow in Ty’s footsteps and make some compelling arguments via party invites. I suggest sending some Ore, after all, the way to a Dinotrux’s heart is through the stomach – unless they happen to be a Garbosaurus, and then you can just send rocks. 

The easier option is to go to Etsy – there are plenty of customizable Dinotrux party invites to choose from.  If you want to add a personal touch, you can make the card yourself. A simple model uses some Dinotrux printables as a background like this one.  To rev it up, you can add some quotes from the show like “Break it down, build it up” or “Let’s trux it up”.  You can make your address ‘the garage’ where Reptools and Dinotrux hang together. Alternatively, you can invite your tiny Dinotrux and Reptools to help the birthday boy or girl retrieve the ore stolen by D-structs.

Dinotrux Birthday Party Decorations

As we’ve seen in the show, it’s not enough to just gather your Dinotrux in one place, you also need to make a garage for them, and make sure everyone, even the long neck Skya, feels at home.  Though I wouldn’t advise making holes in your walls so everyone can fit (or using a giant boulder as a rooftop).  A good place to start would be with a color scheme – except, the show doesn’t really have one (Dinotrux come in all shapes, sizes and colors ).  The next point would be to take the dinosaur theme and run with it – faster than Ton-ton’s wheels.  You can make some pretty simple dinosaur paper lanterns – just cut and glue grey circles and spike shapes to colored paper lanterns.  If you’re looking for something more show specific, you can replicate this idea with Reptools.  You can use a Revvit print-out. The paper lantern will be the body and you will have to cut and glue the head, the spikes, the legs and the tail.

To jazz up the entrance to your ‘garage’ (you can even hold the party in the garage if it’s big enough, wink wink, nudge nudge) you can make this  ‘enter the t-trux mouth’ decoration. Or, if you’re in the market for something simpler, just make the teeth, like so.  To go the extra mile, you can even make some Dinotrux tracks going into the mout. In order to do that, you can paint the tracks on some bit of cloth with the aid of a cut up paint roller – like so.

Another Dinotrux birthday decorations idea is to make your own miniature  Dinotrux garage/cave using cardboard boxes, paper and glue.  It can even be done as a group activity together with the children.

For a wow effect, you can recreate Ty’s tail by making this cardboard wrecking crane.  You’ll have to change the coloring to red and grey and add some black paper cones to the ball, since Ty’s tail is spiked.

On that note, why not make a Dozeratops DIY cardboard bulldozer.  In order to achieve Dozer’s look, you’ll have to make three grey cones and attach two of them on the top of the scoop and one near the bottom. For the finishing touches,  glue a cut-out of Dozer’s face inside the scoop. This can even be used as a costume, if done right.

If you’re feeling crafty and have some time to spare, you can make some hanging Jurassic jungle vines – like this   (you can cut out giant leaf shapes out of green paper and make the vines by twisting butcher paper).  For extra fun, you can attach some cloth dinosaur tails to chairs (check out the birthday costume section for tips on how to make them yourself) and place Reptool cutouts in nooks and crannies (since they are shy and like to hide).

Once the garage is done, you need to manage the feeding instalation, just like our intrepid protagonists did after D-struct poisoned their ore supply with tar. You can start off with a tire tracks table cloth, to match the tracks at the entrance (and maybe signal all that will be left once the hungry horde of Dinotrux pass by). If you feel that it is too repetitive, you can always mix it up with some dinosaur paw prints (cut them out of felt or spray paint them on).  You can place some rocks amongst the serving trays and bowls, afterall, Dinotrux have to dig/crush rocks to get to the ore.  You can even add a bit of leaves and vines (check out the section above on how to make them).

You can serve some of the snacks in a tool box, and call it the Reptool box (which puts you well on the way to king or queen of the bad puns).  You can make a Scrapadactyl nest (think bird nest but bigger – like this decorative nest basket) and use it to serve chocolate eggs (or any egg shaped treats).

You can make your own Dinotrux plates with the aid of transparent plastic plates and cardboard cutouts of the Dinotrux characters (just make sure to glue them on the bottom on the outside, otherwise you’ll have a soggy dinosaur mess in no time).

For the Crafty, you can make some paper machette dinosaur feet using a soup can, some tubes and lots of paper and glue. You can paint them red with grey accents and use them as cutlery holders – kids and adults alike will love them. 

Another Dinotrux party table set up idea is to play on the construction theme of the show and have snacks offloaded from a truck onto a plate, like so.

Dinotrux Costumes and Birthday Outfits

Once food and shelter are off the table (see what I did there?) then you need to take care of repairs – since Dinotrux get scratched, dented and lose parts at a rate that is bound to drive any Reptool crazy. In plain terms – you need to get a costume ready. 

Remember that part at the start when I mentioned how new the show was? That translates into virtually no tutorials for Dinotrux costumes – no matter how long and hard I scoured the internet in search of this precious bit of ore. Luckily, you can make do with combining dinosaur costume tips with construction vehicle costume tips. For instance, you can start with the basis – all Dinotrux have one, namely, a dinosaur tail. You can make your own, like in the tutorial, or buy them online.  To that, you can add some dinosaur feet (very easy to make, and fun to walk with – though your pets might see them as the spawn of the devil crossed with a mailman/water fountain – depending on whether you have a dog or a cat).

Here’s where it gets tricky, since now you have to customize based on each character. For Ty, the T-trux, you need to make the tail red with grey spikes, same goes for the feet.  For a more authentic look, you can recreate the the wrecking ball tail (just attach the cloth ball to the tail via a grey strip of fabric). To round off the look, pair off a grey hoodie with a red vest on top and red pants. For a finishing touch, you can place some grey squares at the top of the hoodie – interspaced, like Ty’s teeth.

For a Dozer costume, you need to pair a bulldozer costume with a triceratops costume.  Don’t forget to add the tail from above (in yellow). Alternatively, you can glue some grey paper horns on the bulldozer costume, and glue a printout of Dozer’s face on the scoop (just like in the decoration section).

You can also make a Skya costume based on this tutorial for a long neck dinosaur costume. Alternatively, you could have the child wear orange clothing on which you can sow cutouts of felt gears and sprockets and at the back you can attach a long tube covered in orange paper (at the end it will have a wire and a tinfoil hook – something like this for the tube.

For a Garby costume, start with this – garbage truck costume, but make it shorter at the back since you want to be able to see the tail from the tutorial above. Then you can add the dinosaur feet and make paper spikes – place them on the back of the truck.  

Dinotrux Party Food and drinks

A Dinotrux is almost always hungry (much like small children tend to be).  To appease the small herd gathered in your home, you need to have plenty of ore at hand (and maybe some bits of metal for the stray Scraptor).

Since we’re on the topic, why not make a Scraptor stash? You can fill it with nuts and bolts. Or you can make scrap metal pizza strips using nuts and bolts shaped toppings like olives, anchovies (or cut salami into strips).

You can also serve something for the respectable Dinotrux, like boulders, wrecking balls and ore for which you can use chocolate covered peanuts, truffles, cake pops or meatballs in sauce (any round-ish brown food item will do). For some more authentic ore look, you can serve some black/grey rock candy.

Another Dinotrux party food idea is to make some Stegarbasaurus guacamole dip – and place tortilla chips like spikes in it.  Alternatively, you could make a ‘build a burger’ bar – since the show is all about problem solving 😉 .  Your Dinotrux get to have fun while making their own food (hopefully without wrecking anything in the process).

You can also serve dino bolts – you make them by sticking pretzels into marshmallows and dipping them into grey candy melts.  Then there are Skya’s neck orange skewers and Dozer in the tar pit platters (yellow fruit and chocolate fondue).

For something a bit more fun, you can make these search for ore pudding cups with chocolate rocks or try your hand at a Watermellon T-trux.  For those with skill and patience, there are these cute (but laborious) toolbox cookies. Or, you could try making Scrapadactil nests –with shredded wheat and chocolate.

Dinotrux Birthday cake and cupcakes

The finest ore on the table is the birthday cake – Dinotrux and even Reptools from far and wide have come to marvel at its beauty and sample its flavors.  The quick and easy way to satisfy your tiny horde robo-dinosaurs is to order out – you can get cake decoration shops to make everything from the fanciest 3D models to printing a cake topper with edible ink (it’s all a matter of how much you feel like torturing your wallet).

Alternatively, you could make some pretty dinosaur cupcakes yourself.  Or, another easy to make cake is a Ty and Revvit fondant cut-out cake. For that you will need to make a cake and cover it with fondant (or icing) and on top of it you can place a cut-out of the characters. Make sure to cut each part out of the corresponding fondant color then glue all the parts together for an effect like this.

For something a little more complicated and a lot more fun, you can make a smoking volcano cake, just like in the tutorial, and add Dinotrux toys at the bottom.  The effect will be stunnig – science, food and entertainment all in one.

Another easy to make but visually stunning Dinotrux birthday cake idea is to make a construction site cake. The only thing you’ll need to do to recreate the show is replace the toys in the video with Dinotrux.

For something a bit more complicated, you can make a Revvit cake. To do that, you start with this lizard cake tutorial. You’ll need to use green fondant for the head and yellow fondant for the rest of the body.  To round off the look, we need to add the tool in the Reptool.  You can do that by making a screwdriver tip, half a wrench and other tool tips out of fondant and adding them to the ‘spine’ of the lizard (down the middle of the cake). For a nice finishing touch, you can recreate some measuring tape out of a thin strip of fondant on which you paint lines and numbers. Since Revvit has a quick measuring tape (as a chameleon tongue), you can place a tip of your decoration  under all the cake layers, next to the mouth.

Last, but definitely not least is this  Garby stegosaurus cake. Despite its looks, the process of making it is not really that intimidating. To make it easier for those without professional fondant decorating tools, instead of spray painting the fondant, you can use forest green fondant and add a small light green stripe next to the belly. For color accent you can either paint them in using food colorant or cut strips of grey fondant to use next to the spikes.  On that important note, make the spykes grey. For an extra touch, you can place some small squares of cube wrapped in grey fondant next to the tail (since Garby likes to eat and shoot out compacted rocks).

Dinotrux Party Games and activities

Dinotrux and Reptools are a rowdy bunch, especially Ton-ton who can’t sit still unless tied to a rock (and a rather big one at that). Here are a few activities to keep them entertained.

For the hatchlings, you can start off with some coloring pages. Dreamworks to the rescue.  However, if you plan something more active, you can start with a cardboard tunnel maze (you can make one using giant moving boxes) and dub it the garage maze.

A fun activity for all involved is the Reptool plan: making bridges out of toothpicks and marshmallows. Another quick and easy way to keep your Dinotrux entertained is to make a feed the T-trucks bean bag toss (with grey bags, like ore), or to stage a hot lava tug of war between Dinotrux and Scraptors.

For something more active, you can stage a chase game with Dinotrux and Scraptors.  For that you will need to divide the children into two teams. The Dinotrux have to collect ore – grey bean bags spread out in a few places. It’s the Scraptors’s job to stop them.  Dinotrux are safe from Scraptors in their garage – in two locations in the yard. If a Dinotrux gets caught by a Scraptor, they get sent to the junkyard. A special designated place in the yard.  If a fellow Dinotrux doesn’t touch the dino in the junkyard in the next 2 minutes, then they are scrapped for parts (eliminated from the game). Dinotrux win if they collect all the ore, Scraptors win if they eliminate all the Dinotrux.

Alternatively, children can play Skya’s tail. One child is the head and has to catch the rest of the body. Once a child is touched, he holds hands with the other(s)  and they have to run like this and catch the rest of the children. The last child to get tagged becomes the new head.

Another fun Dinotrux party game is Click-Clack’s hiding spot.  For this game, all the children are Reptools. One of them gets designated as Click-Clack. Click-Clack then needs to hide while the rest of the children count to 20. Once the counting is done, the children can search for him.  Whichever Reptool finds him gets scared by his paranoia and has to join Click-Clack in hiding, as quietly as possible. One by one the Reptools hide together till there is no one left – the last Reptool to find the hiding spot becomes Click-Clack.

Last but not least, you can play Ty’s wrecking tail. Each child gets to wear the tail and knock down as many rocks as possible. You can make the tail using some pantyhose and an orange as a weight at the end (tie it around the children’s middle) – or make some of the tails in the birthday costume section.  Then you need to set up the ‘rocks’ by placing empty 2 littler bottles around the area. Each child gets 1 minute to knock down as many rocks as possible. They aren’t allowed to touch their tail; they have to swing it using only their hips.

Once everything that needed to be built is done, the Dinotrux retire to their own sleeping places. To see them through the long and perilous journey home, you can give them some ore, for one the way (in the form of gumballs). You can also include some tool keychains (and make the obvious pun about Reptools). For diehard dinosaur fans, you can add some T-rex erasers, or some DIY Dino hats (that the kids can wear incessantly at home, much to the delight of their parents)Ow, and let’s not forget dinosaur finger pupets – those never get old.  If you don’t mind spending a bit, you can purchase Dinotrux die-cast character toys and make sure to give each child his or her own favorite character (a bit of conspiring with the toher parents beforehand is much encouraged).
